Chapter Sixteen

The rest of the evening flew by and I, for one, actually slept soundly. Despite that, I had to drag myself out of bed when the time came. Tivani had slept with me again, and she wasn’t any better. With bleary eyes she mumbled something I couldn’t make out and made her way into the bathroom.

The plan was that I would stay in the control room with Vsara. She would be watching and giving me updates so the Melodia could stay mobile during the fight, giving us another small advantage. Leena, Suli, and Tivani would be manning the cannons on the upper decks, which had been fully repaired by Oziin and stocked with piles of ordnance.

Tivani would have her sharpcaster as well, and Leena would be wearing her plate and ready to go down to the ground at the end.

Tuniri had elected to stay in her room, and Oziin was going to remain with her.

No one objected to that. It was clear that Tuniri wasn’t cut out for any of this, and Oziin couldn’t do much in the middle of a battle either.

As I sat in the Melodia’s commander’s chair, I glanced over at Vsara. “Leena says this is going to be easy.”

She didn’t look back at me as she said, “She actually said that? Out loud?”

“Yeah.”

“Bad luck.”

“Yeah, she said that too.”

Vsara smiled and shook her head. “I can’t say I disagree with her. I doubt anyone in the world would be prepared for what’s coming, let alone some small-time thugs in a remote backwater. They probably haven’t even heard of Runic Lords or the things that came before the Contagion. It’s possible they won’t be able to make sense of any of this. A walking fort shows up and starts using weapons that normally only exist on large city’s battlements? They’ll probably shit themselves while running for the hills.”

“That’d be funny if we weren’t intending on killing them.”

She gave me a look utterly devoid of expression and said, “It’s still a little funny.”

I laughed and said, “Damn. Vicious,” to which she smiled.

As we rounded the last little foothill and saw what we were dealing with, I leaned back in my chair and said, “Oh, wow. Those poor fuckers.” Their towers, such as they were, seemed to be made of hastily cobbled together wooden planks. They were little more than rickety platforms for a few guards to stand on top of. They didn’t even have roofs. I could only describe the buildings as post-apocalyptic. There was a palisade around the entire place, but it was just as ramshackle as the rest of it. “Should we…I mean…we can just walk over the palisade, right? It’s not going to slow us down, is it?”

Vsara slowly shook her head, her eyes a little wide. “Well, I’m not as versed as Tivani on the Melodia’s capabilities, but…yes, just walk over it.” We shared a side-eyed glance and she added, “You’re right. Those poor fuckers.”

It was an odd feeling, sitting in that chair, safe
